What is a smoothie? Why is it so good?

A smoothie is a fresh drink prepared by mixing fruit and/or greens combined with liquid and other whole foods such as nuts, seeds and oils in a blender until it becomes creamy and smooth.

The main benefits of drinking smoothies:

1 They are packed with nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants that the body needs to stay healthy.
2 A smoothie offers a quick and tasty way to include large amounts of fruit and leafy greens into your diet on a daily basis. Drinking it is so much easier!
3 Smoothies are a great way to start eating more whole foods and cut down on processed foods with low or no nutritional value.
4 Healthy smoothies are great energy boosters and helps support a better immune system.
5 They can help you loose weight in a natural way using natural ingredients.

What is a green smoothie?

A green smoothie in it’s most basic form combines fruit, liquid and leafy greens such as spinach, kale, chard, romaine lettuce, parsley etc. The end result is a green coloured drink but depending on how much fruit and what type of fruit you add the colour can also be more red or brown. The consistency is creamy and smooth (depending on you blender) and very nutritious.

Leafy greens offer some of the most potent nutritional profiles on the planet and is something that we should eat much more of on a daily basis. By making the greens into a smooth delicious drink you can easily consume large amounts without having to chew like a rabbit :)

Do green smoothies taste like grass?

No, absolutely not! The recipes we provide here are combined with fruits to help balance and sweeten the flavour, most people are surprised to find that they taste delicious. A good rule of thumb is to mix 40% greens with 60% fruit to make the fruit flavours dominant.

Do I need a high speed blender to make smoothies?

The simple answer to this question is no, you can get started with any blender. But if you want to include a lot of greens in your smoothies, such as kale or spinach or even raw nuts, they will not mix up entirely and you will have some chunky bits in your smoothie, making it a bit chewy.

With a high speed blender, such as the Blendtec or Vitamix, you will get a smooth creamy result every time. But they cost a lot of money and you should remember that the most important thing is to get started, not having the perfect blender from day 1. You can always upgrade later on.

Can I add sweeteners?

If you find that a recipe isn’t sweet enough for your taste, simply add some more banana or other ripe fruits that offer a natural sweetness. You can also add stevia if you like, stevia is a herbal sweetener and contains no sugar. If you wish, some honey or agave syrup can be added as well. Stevia and agave syrup can be found in well stocked super markets and also in health food shops.

How can I make my smoothies more filling?

Adding nuts and seeds is a great way to make your smoothie more filling. Cashew nuts are great if you don’t have a high speed blender since they are not so hard and blend fairly easily. Raw almonds are also a very good option packed with good fat, vitamin E, calcium and magnesium. The best thing is to soak your nuts and seeds for a minimum of four hours (over night is a great way) before blending them since this makes them more easy to digest and increases the nutritional value.

Can I use frozen fruit instead of fresh?

Yes, frozen fruits are fine to use. If you have some over-ripe fruit in your fridge, just freeze it and use it when you need it instead of letting it go to waste. You can also buy bags of frozen fruit and that works well too.

Can I freeze greens?

Yes, you can freeze greens without problems and a lot of the nutrition is kept too. If you want to freeze fresh herbs, mix up them up with a little water and make it into ice cubes. This way nothing goes to waste and you can use them whenever you need.

Can I replace a meal with a smoothie?

Yes, absolutely! This is the ideal way. Smoothies are a good and nutritious meal at any time of the day. If you find that a recipe is not filling enough for you, just add some cashew nuts or hemp protein to the mixture. You can also replace water for coconut water or almond milk, which also makes them a bit more filling. Personally we always have our smoothie in the morning as a breakfast meal. This is a great way to cut down on sugary cereals, bread and dairy products. A serving of about two cups (500 ml) is a good portion size.

Can I store a ready blended smoothie in the refrigerator?

Yes you can, it will last for about 1-2 days in the fridge, but it won’t taste the same as when you make it fresh. If you want to store it, just make sure to store it in an air-tight jar or bottle, we recommend using mason jars or air-tight & leak-proof Nalgene bottles. You need a good lid that stops the smoothie from oxidizing. A fresh smoothie will last 1-2 days in the fridge like this, however the best thing is to drink it right away for optimal nutrition and taste. Storing your smoothie cold for up to 4 hours will not impact the flavor much.

What are some good non-dairy options for milk?

Nut and seed milks are great and can be made from almost any nut or seed. Almond milk is most common and you can also buy this ready made. Soya milk and rice milk can also be used but almond milk has more nutrition. Coconut water is another great liquid

Do all fruit and greens have to be organic?

Organic is better of course but also more expensive. All your fruit and veg don’t have to be organic if you can’t afford it or if you can’t find it in your area. Just do the best that you can with the budget that you have. Eating non-organic fruit and vegetables are still so much more beneficial than eating no green food at all so it outweighs the downsides by far. When you do your grocery shopping, a good rule of thumb is to by leafy greens organic since they are so thin and almost all surface area. If they are sprayed with pesticide this is going to affect almost the entire plant. If you can find and afford fruits where you intend to eat the skin that’s good to buy organic too. But just do the best that you can with the budget that you have, that’s really the best advice.

To cut down on costs for fruit and veg, look out for good deals and buy in bulk so that you can freeze it and use it for future smoothies. Frozen fruits are generally less expensive so whatever you can’t find during the season just buy frozen.

What else should I eat besides healthy smoothies?

What we recommend is to start simple. If you are not already incorporating healthy smoothies into your diet, start with that first. The key to success is to adopt one healthy habit at a time because then it’s much easier to maintain and truly make it a natural part of your life. If you are already into the habit of making smoothies, then the answer is to cook and eat as much whole foods as possible. By whole foods we mean cooking with ingredients in it’s natural form, not with foods that have been altered or processed in any way. Whole foods is pure food, no additives or chemicals have been added to it. Transitioning to this type of food is fantastic for your overall health.
